When processing card payments through providers like Stripe, PayPal, or Square, businesses frequently pay a blended flat rate of 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. On $50,000 of monthly volume, that amounts to roughly $1,600 per month—or nearly $20,000 every year—disappearing into financial gateway overhead.

1. Request Custom Enterprise or Interchange-Plus Pricing

Both Stripe and PayPal publicly market flat-rate pricing for convenience, but they offer customized rate schedules once your account reaches $80,000 to $100,000/month in continuous gross processing volume.

With Interchange-Plus pricing, you pay the direct wholesale card interchange fee set by Visa and Mastercard (often between 1.15% and 1.65% for standard domestic debit and basic consumer credit cards) plus a fixed markup from Stripe (typically 0.15% to 0.30% + $0.10). For businesses with high debit card percentages, this single transition reduces total fees by 30% to 45%.

2. Incentivize ACH Direct Debit for B2B Invoices

If you bill agency clients or enterprise customers above $1,000 per invoice, taking credit card payments is financially wasteful. Stripe charges just 0.80% capped at $5.00 for US ACH Direct Debit payments.

Example on a $5,000 Client Retainer:
Credit Card Fee (2.9% + $0.30): $145.30
ACH Direct Debit (0.80% capped at $5): $5.00
Net Savings Per Invoice: $140.30 (96.5% reduction)

3. Eliminate Cross-Border Currency Conversion Gouging

Stripe and PayPal charge an additional 1.5% to 2.0% fee whenever a customer pays in a foreign currency or using an international card. If your Stripe account is in USD but your customer pays in EUR, Stripe also takes a 1% currency conversion spread.

To avoid this, enable Stripe multi-currency bank payouts. By connecting local foreign currency bank accounts (such as a Wise Business multi-currency EUR or GBP virtual IBAN), Stripe deposits local currency directly without forcing costly currency conversions.

4. Implement Reverse Invoice Pricing (Passing Fees Compliantly)

In many US jurisdictions (subject to state surcharge laws and card network guidelines), merchants are permitted to offer a cash/ACH discount or adjust service quotes to ensure the net payout received exactly matches the project quote. Use our Reverse Invoice Calculator to calculate the mathematically exact gross billing amount needed to clear your target net.
